Depending on the type of business you're opening, its very survival may depend on where you choose to locate it. Careful research and thought must go into this decision, if you're entering an industry where drop-in business is essential. And if your enterprise is home-based, you'll need to pay close attention to local ordinances that may affect you.
Some things to consider when choosing a location:
- Where will your business be exposed to the most -- or right type of -- traffic?
- Where is your competition located? Would your business benefit from being near competitors? Or should you be the only store of your kind in an area?
- Can your business be seen from major roads or is it hidden from site?
- Are there any legal restrictions on where you can place signs or how large they can be?
- Is the location zoned for your type of business?
- Is there adequate parking?
- Are the facilities and grounds neat and attractive?
Some guidelines for home-based businesses:
- Check zoning laws and environmental regulations.
- Find out whether a certificate of occupancy is required from your local government. Contact the local government authorities, including the building department, for pertinent information. Some inspections and alterations may be required to meet state and/or city codes.
- Check with the city clerk's office about a zoning variance. Some states require fees for home-based businesses.
- Get a separate mailing address to protect your privacy. You may consider getting a mailing address at a mail service store, such as UPS.
